Sacred Heart Ikon Painting

Because I forgot to prepare something new for today I am featuring an old portrait I painted, but one that I like very much. This is an example of a "fantasy portrait" where I combined some of the client's favorite things, ideas, and motifs.

Here are some shots of the completed work, acrylic on canvas, 18" x 24". I absolutely loved working on this painting. The client was so pleased. Her mother gave it the nicest comment, that it looked like "The Alice in Wonderland" version of her daughter. A few of the things the client really liked were the peacock feathers, the copy of De Humani Corporis Fabrica by Vesalius at her right hand, and she really appreciated that the books had bindings proper to the period.

Stunning! And the craft is diligent.

Love every detail: the moth, the eye glasses, the wedding ring, the book opened to either a naked man or some anatomy drawing, the steely-eyed cat, the ostrich feathers, the patterned wallpaper, the drape, the skull, the book, the flowers, but ESPECIALLY the glowing heart. It's like a grenade, about to explode.

It's great work, for sure. And rather unsettling.

And Kass is right about the grenade heart. Wow.
