The Mistle Child

Sir Hugh Platt says: “By sitting uppon a hill late in an evening, neare a wood, in a few nights a firedrake will appeare; marke where it lighteth, and there you shall find an oake with a mistletoe therein, at the roots wherof there is a mistel child, wherof many strange things are conceived.”- W.C. Hazlitt’s Dictionary of Faiths and Folklore. The Mistle Child at My Good Babushka.

The Devil Eats the Cure for Human Suffering

Finished work:
The Devil Eats the Cure for Human Suffering at My Good Babushka. Original acrylic painting on acid free paper, approximately 8' x 10". The Devil Eats the Cure for Human Suffering. The Devil's Bit. Inspired by W.C. Hazlitt's Dictionary of Faiths and Folklore. There is one herb, flat at the bottom, almost as if its root were cut off. It is said that the devil, knowing that part of the root would cure all diseases, bit it off.

The Rabbit Maid

I've decided to work on a second rabbit themed painting. This time with giant rabbits. I feel it should be wintery.

Sacred Heart Fantasy Ikon Portrait

I painted this portrait in 2008 and had the honor of retouching it and cleaning it a wee bit since it was in storage for a while. I just thought I'd show it off again. And remind you that I'm always up for custom commissions.

Fantasy Portrait Session Five

Here I worked on the portrait of the woman, and began to sketch out the idea of her armor. The top is to be scale mail, and the bottom riveted plate armor, I think. Since my husband makes chainmail and has lots of books about armor, I will not want for source material.

Fantasy Portrait Session Three

Working up the portrait of the man, and getting his right hand down. I looked up pictures of people near fires to see how the coloring of the skin was affected. There is a yellow-ish orange bit of illumination around his hair and cheek. But again, not too much, because the likeness must remain the focal point.

Sacred Heart Ikon Painting

Because I forgot to prepare something new for today I am featuring an old portrait I painted, but one that I like very much. This is an example of a "fantasy portrait" where I combined some of the client's favorite things, ideas, and motifs.

Here are some shots of the completed work, acrylic on canvas, 18" x 24". I absolutely loved working on this painting. The client was so pleased. Her mother gave it the nicest comment, that it looked like "The Alice in Wonderland" version of her daughter. A few of the things the client really liked were the peacock feathers, the copy of De Humani Corporis Fabrica by Vesalius at her right hand, and she really appreciated that the books had bindings proper to the period.
