Fantasy Portrait Session Six

I wish I had taken more pictures of the steps, but the armor came together so quickly I didn't think of it. Reflective metal is such a fun thing to do, it often comes together by accident. Reflective surfaces, in general, are a delight to do. I remember back in high school, how exciting and awful and terrifying the still life with wine bottles and glasses arranged on a draped fabric seemed! And it was terrible! All of our glasses were misshapen, the open tops all wonky, wrong, ovoid shapes. Reflective glass is a forgiving thing to paint, but the bones, the lines, must be intact underneath, or it is a terrible mess. Sometimes I think I might do a still life again, just for fun.

If you are interested in having a portrait done my rates are as follows:
9" x 12"..... $100
11" x 14".... $200
16" x 20".... $300
18" x 24".... $400
22" x 28".... $500
24" x 36".... $600
For a "fantasy" style portrait, with fantasy embellishment, add $50 to the base price.

Fantasy Portrait Session Five

Here I worked on the portrait of the woman, and began to sketch out the idea of her armor. The top is to be scale mail, and the bottom riveted plate armor, I think. Since my husband makes chainmail and has lots of books about armor, I will not want for source material.

Fantasy Portrait Session Three

Working up the portrait of the man, and getting his right hand down. I looked up pictures of people near fires to see how the coloring of the skin was affected. There is a yellow-ish orange bit of illumination around his hair and cheek. But again, not too much, because the likeness must remain the focal point.

Fantasy Portrait Session Two

I tried to get a good shot of the ivy on the tree, the twisted roots and rocks. I am trying to get all the big decisions in about the drape of the fabric on the fire mage's gown and cape. It is important to get it the right length for the subject's height, which meant adding a little bit more to the bottom. He is a good deal taller than her, but I want to de-emphasize the difference in their heights, so they get equal billing in the portrait as a whole.

Fantasy Portrait Session One

Here is a commission to make a fantasy portrait of a couple as their Dungeons and Dragons personae: a fire mage and a medieval-clad warrior.
