The Bellman of the Dead

The custom in France until the middle of the 18th century was for a man to go about the streets dressed in a deacon's robe, death's head, bones and tears. He would  cry for the sleepers to awake and remember the dead. To pray to God for their souls. The Bellman of the Dead.
