Bellman of the Dead

The custom in France until the middle of the 18th century was for a man to go about the streets dressed in a deacon's robe, death's head, bones and tears. He would cry for the sleepers to awake and remember the dead. To pray to God for their souls.

This is an original painting 8" x 10" acrylic on acid-free paper. A one of a kind illustration signed by the artist, Julie Kwiatkowski Schuler. The painting does not contain the black borders or "My Good Babushka" watermark. These were added for formatting and security purposes.
You can find purchasing information for this piece, The Bellman of the Dead Original Painting
at My Good Babushka. Art, Jewelry and Needlework. Prints of The Bellman of the Dead are also available.

The Bellman of the Dead

I wanted to make his long trailing robe split to resemble an earwig's posterior. I thought it would add to his macabre appearance. The Bellman of the Dead , original painting is available, and also Bellman of the Dead prints are available. Hope you stop by My Good Babushka, art, embroidery and jewelry today.

Marocco Embroidery

Marocco was the trained performing horse of Mr. William Bankes who lived in the late 16th - 17th century in England. He was a very famous and beloved performer. Whilst travelling in France, however, the two were accused of witchcraft! Bankes was clever and taught Marocco to bow down when the cross was produced, and that is how Bankes and Marocco escaped and saved their necks!
Here is my embroidered tribute to William Bankes and Marocco.

More than half done now.
