Anatomists Embroidery

Returning to a theme I like, I decided to embroider a little scene of three anatomists at work. Approximately 9" x 12" canvas embroidered with cotton floss.

The Collectors

Two little boys looking slightly wary seen in the woods with a sagittal slice of skull in a specimen jar. That seems about right.
I've added some butterflies to the final composition and here the listing in my etsy shop. The Collectors by My Good Babushka!

The Collectors

The Collectors, a painting in progress. I bribed my sons with some cookies and got them to pose for me. Matthew, the bigger one, had a very hard time keeping a straight face. I was trying to find something he could hold that would be the same size as the specimen jar that I meant to put in the painting. Holding the kitchen trash can really cracked him up for some reason.

The Collectors

I had my sons pose for me. Justin took it very seriously. He was a very good model.

Anatomy School

Only two more doctors to flesh out, and that cadaver head to contend with. I threw in some green at the end for that one doctor's gown, but I don't know if I'll keep it. Maybe I'll soften it a little so it's more subtle.

Anatomy School

Since I love them so much, I decided to make another painting from a vintage medical school photo. Here come the little doctors, huzzah for anatomy academy!

The Three Anatomists

I spent a very brief time on my Three Anatomists painting. This will be doctor number one. I need to get this paper mounted on a board, though. It is very hard to paint on paper, even when it's gessoed. It gets too warpy.

The Three Anatomists

I'm starting a new painting. This is on large, gessoed paper, I think it's 18" x 24". I'm using an old photo for a source image, but liberally improvising. I like putting in the background, layering up a lot of grimy, ochery, umbery paint. I like letting the accidents happen where they will happen. It is a way to approximate the spirit of old photography without being slavish about reproducing it.
