The Witch Sailed Away in the Eggshell

Finishing up my painting of the witch sailing away in the eggshell.

Original painting approximately 8" x 10" acrylic on acid-free paper. Inspired by the folk belief in the British Isles that eggshells must be thoroughly broken after an egg was eaten or a witch might commandeer the eggshell for a sailing vessel. She would inscribe the name of the egg-eater on the inside, and that victim would become bewitched. The Witch in the Eggshell, original work available at My Good Babushka.

Witch in the Eggshell

Worked on my witch in her eggshell vessel and the pitcher today. A little bit on the salt shaker and the basket of eggs.

Inspired by the superstitious notion that eggshells must be thoroughly broken to prevent witches from taking them over and sailing away in them. Finished up the patterned tile and hope to move onto the pitcher next.

The Witch in the Eggshell

Started a painting combining some things I like, pictures from vintage cookbooks and weird folk beliefs. It was believed that eggshells must be thoroughly broken or witches could crawl into them and sail away. They may even inscribe your name on the inside of the shell causing you all sorts of bewitchment... bewitchery... headaches.
