More work on my portrait of four gentlemen, from a vintage photo. As  you can see it has the old scalloped edges, I'm guessing it's from the early to mid 1950s. Even though the men in the picture are cut off at the knee, I did some inventing and put them in, head to toe. The reason I did this was because I have a companion photo of their lovely women sitting on the same davenport, but in the ladies photo the feet are included. I plan on making a painting from the women's photo, too.  So for the sake of symmetry I extended the men's portrait to include the feet.  I wonder which one of these men took the photo? I wonder which one of the women took this photo?

Working on my second gentleman. I am using the same palette, but changing the colors slightly. Everyone has a different skin color. I don't want to make them too uniform. So while the man on the left is redder and more flush, I've made the man on the right a tad  more ocher.

Here is a pretty straightforward painting I'm making from a vintage photograph. The photo is from the late fifties, probably. It's a small black and white photo, the kind with the scalloped edges. My painting is colorized and 11" x 14" acrylic on canvas board. I've picked my favorite palette of greens, ochers,  and reds.

More progress on my painting based on a vintage photo. Bleary-eyed little ladies having a fine time with some fine wine!

Ladies Night

An original painting in progress based on a vintage photo. I'm using my favorite palette of reds, greens and ochers. I enjoy making up the little faces of my cast of characters. The source photo, in this case, is very small and overexposed, so I have a lot of room to invent what I want.

Ladies at Supper

Meandered around a bit with the wallpaper and clock. There seems to be some shelves back there. Then when I started the portrait of the first lady, I really pegged it, just right. I love everything about her glance and the deep color around her eye, and the light on her skin. Hope I don't mess it up.

The sketch and bare beginning of a new painting I'm making from a vintage photo. The back of this little photograph is dated 1932-3 and features very elegant ladies at a dining table. My husband thinks it looks "Last Suppery" and I guess it really can't help but invoke that very famous scene. That's really not what I'm going for, but at this point I don't know how to avoid it. Maybe a solution will present itself along the way. Or else I will make peace with the fact that it will always remind everyone of the Last Supper!
